Astrology is one of my long-time hobbies: I have been studying it for years and have countless books, workbooks and notebooks on the topic. It is the study of the influence of the planets and stars on our lives. You probably know your sun sign if you like to read your daily horoscope, but natal charts can be much more in-depth. Anyway, I was watching more Jane Austen movies the other day and started wondering which sign some of my favorite characters might be. There is little written evidence of characters birthday months, so here is what I imagine based on personalities!

LYdia Bennet ♈ Aries
Sweet and flirty Lydia might not seem like a headstrong Aries upon first acquaintance, but do not be fooled by her childlike innocence. Though confident and eager, she can be reckless, impatient, and irresponsible. Aries is a fire sign—red-hot, impulsive, and ready to go. What her sisters see as carelessness appears to suitors as fearlessness, and her desire for independence gets her into trouble.
Elizabeth Bennet ♉ Taurus
Earthy, practical and down-to-earth are perfect descriptors of Eliza Bennet. Although easy-going and respectful, the Taurus can be unbelievably stubborn and reluctant to compromise (as proved by her prejudice of Mr. Darcy). Like any Taurus she loves the beauty of nature but can be self-indulgent in reading and walking, sometimes to a fault. She is also incredibly determined, patient, and enduring—once she knows what she wants!
Emma Woodhouse ♊ Gemini
Gemini’s are witty, bright, and talkative, very much like the social butterfly Emma Woodhouse. Studious and clever, Emma is a great example of this airy sign. She is a thoughtful neighbor and is quick to help her friends. However, she can be gossipy and shallow. Thankfully, Mr. Knightly consistently keeps her in-check with his honesty.
Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy ♋ Cancer
Deeply intuitive and sentimental, Cancer can be one of the most challenging zodiac signs to get to know. They are very emotional and sensitive, and care deeply about matters of the family and home. They can be very protective, defensive, and even withdrawn, much like Mr. Darcy. But once Lizzy breaks through his hard shell, it is clear that deep down he is tender and romantic. Mysterious and moody, Mr. Darcy is clearly a crab.
Mrs. Bennet ♌ Leo
Like every lion, Mrs. Bennet loves to be the center-of-attention. Leo’s need to be loved and appreciated by others and will become melodramatic when they don’t get their way. They can be overbearing and dramatic at times, but are loyal to their family and friends. Akin to a lioness, Mrs. Bennet is a clear leader in home and social matters, and you do not want to be on her bad side!
*One of the only characters with a named birth date is Anne Elliot from Persuasion, who was born on August 9th, 1787, making her another Leo.
Jane Bennet ♍ Virgo

Elizabeth Bennet’s older sister is all that’s good in the world—hardworking, sensible and good humored. Virgo’s best traits, like Jane’s, are loyalty, analytical thinking, and practicality. But sometimes those get the best of them, making Virgos play it safe all the time, much to the frustration of their friends. Don’t be afraid to voice what you really want, Virgo! You deserve Mr. Bingley!
Mr. Charles Bingley ♎ Libra
Mr. Charles Bingley is agreeable and charming like a classic Libra. Unfortunately, Libras are desperately afraid of confrontation: when Bingley realizes he loves Jane, he’s too afraid to reveal his true feelings. Libras are also hopeless people-pleasers who cannot act alone. He allows himself to be dissuaded of his love for Jane because of his dependence on Darcy and desire to please his sisters.
Caroline Bingley ♏ Scorpio
Whatever you do, do not mess with a Scorpio. With their courage and loyalty, you want Scorpios like Caroline Bingley on your side. Like the scorpion, beware of their sting. But while they can be distrustful and jealous, Scorpios are also determined to get to the truth of the matter, making them reliable, moral, and deeply admirable.
Mr. Bennet ♐ Sagittarius
Mr. Bennet is a standard Sagittarius. Ever the optimist, he unfailingly looks for the bright side and silver-lining in any situation, making jokes and teasing his nervous wife. He is independent and wise, seeking solace in his library. But his head may be too high in the clouds to see reason when real world issues arise.
Elinor Dashwood ♑ Capricorn
Elinor is a classic Capricorn: responsible, with excellent manners and self-control. Those born under this sign are dutiful, hardworking, and realistic, just like the sensible Elinor. When her family is faced with tragedy, she steps up as the prudent and practical planner the family needs. She is perhaps too conservative and overcautious with her feelings though, and lets her emotions all build up until she just can’t hold them in any longer.
Fanny Price ♒ Aquarius
Fanny Price is the archetypal Aquarius. She is creative, brilliant, and values her freedom. Friendly and spirited, Fanny’s strong moral compass serves her well, keeping her out of trouble and making her trustworthy. She refuses a man she does not love and is not afraid of being thought of as unusual.
Marianne Dashwood & Catherine Morland ♓ Pisces
I can imagine that both of these dreamy ladies are the feeling fish, because they are both so vulnerable and romantic. With their heads in the clouds (and noses in books), these women represent sensitivity and secrecy. Marianne, though poetic and empathetic, becomes ungrounded and self-destructive when faced with the loss of her lover—typical of Pisces melancholy. Catherine, also like a Pisces, allows her imaginations to run away with her. This water sign can be misunderstood, but there is value in allowing yourself to dream and feel deeply, which Marianne and Catherine demonstrate perfectly.
*Persuasion is the only book written by Jane Austen that contains written evidence of characters’ birthdays:
“Walter Elliot, born March 1, 1760, married, July 15, 1784, Elizabeth, daughter of James Stevenson, Esq. of South Park, in the county of Gloucester, by which lady (who died 1800) he has issue Elizabeth, born June 1, 1785; Anne, born August 9, 1787; a still-born son, November 5, 1789; Mary, born November 20, 1791.”

Walter Elliot: Pisces
Elizabeth Elliot: Gemini
Anne Elliot: Leo
Mary Elliot: Scorpio
Leo: Henry Tilney
Libra: Edward Ferrars
Scorpio: Colonel Brandon
